A collection of monumental proportions, these five buildings form a single project. Together, they cover almost an entire block while representing different architectural styles. Built as private residences, these properties long housed the offices of GE Artesia Bank. As part of a lease-back agreement with Artesia we purchased them, along with two adjacent ones on the Reguliersdwarsstraat side.

Grand in its ambition yet refined in its details, De Bruynvis is a statement property. Acquired with the aim of creating office spaces, we transformed this former school into the palatial setting for Scotch & Soda’s marketing and design departments. Beyond the imposing facade you’ll find a light interior. Smooth marble and herringbone parquet deck the hallways and rooms, set alight by bright copper detailing. We opened up spaces with glass frames while maintaining an intimate atmosphere. With De Bruynvis we both preserved the property’s character and tailored it for and with Scotch & Soda.

The building’s solid dark facade almost makes you miss the elegant white crown on top. This duality is typical for the building we at Millten call home. Redeveloping this former merchant’s home, we wanted to strike the perfect balance between clean design and rich details. The 18th century ballroom still shows off its baroque opulence, while the refurbished offices maintain a more simplistic appeal. From the heavy front door, marble halls and whitewashed walls lead you to light working spaces. Like a gentleman’s club, the atmosphere smoothly mixes business with pleasure. This house is not just our home, but also a reflection of how we like to work with our partners.

At 150 meters long and shining with ambition, this location sits at the heart of up-and-coming Amsterdam North. The sleek architecture and modern-industrial look perfectly match our vision for ‘Johan’, as we lovingly call it. We bought the property with the aim of developing it as a base for creative and young businesses. ‘Johan’ will be where start-ups take the next step. With more than 40 tenants already in-house, we are raising the entrepreneurial spirit of this part of Amsterdam.

Walking past these buildings is like walking past sailing ships at the docks. The crossed white beams and blue doors could easily be mistaken for a mast and sails. But this former metal forge on the NDSM-plein now forges bold ideas for creative companies. We acquired these properties because of their original features, including the exposed steel construction, masonry and concrete flooring. This industrial rawness complements an otherwise sleek interior to create inspiring working spaces for the area’s flourishing creative industry.

When we first came across the old Werktheater, we saw the potential for a truly new breed of building. Giving renewed purpose to this former VOC shipyard and theatre required an equally imaginative tenant. We found the perfect one in …,staat creative agency. Together we reimagined what a creative space could be. Combining studios, offices, a restaurant and bar into an exciting mix of purpose and pleasure. We maintained many original features while adding new functions and designs. The result is a multilayered and multifunctional building concept where creativity still takes centre stage, the New Werktheater.

Standing before the 45-metre wide front, anyone would be in awe of this former hospital’s grandeur. Acquiring this iconic and sprawling structure was a chance we couldn’t pass up. We developped the 175 year old Prinsengrachtziekenhuis into a next-generation environment for entrepreneurs, creatives and innovators. Respecting the building’s old structure, we are completely transforming its function together with Fosbury & Sons. Reimagined as a business hub, the Prinsengrachtziekenhuis will let members enjoy 24/7 accessibility and multifunctional spaces. They can mix work with leisure and connect with other professionals. Private workspaces provide focus while state-of-the-art meeting rooms let groups get down to business. The top-notch coffee bar and luxurious Founders’ Club are guaranteed to kickstart your day or night. Carefully curated art, canal views and the relaxing garden will take care of the rest.

Much of this street used to be closed up garages for the grand houses on the adjacent Herengracht. We saw the potential, however, and transformed this backside into a frontside. Opening up the heavy facade with floor to ceiling glass, showcasing a redesigned interior. Original brick walls combine with concrete and steel elements to give the space an industrial feel. Finding the perfect tenant in VICE, the multilevel building now houses their Benelux HQ. It includes meeting rooms, workspaces and lounge areas. With the Reguliersdwarsstraat, we acquired and developed a hidden gem into a front office.

An outstanding historical property with intimate character, we purchased and are now developing Singel 28 to modern residential standards.

With its rectangular structure and large open space, this former smithy’s is characteristic for the NDSM neighborhood. The building’s tinted windows reflect its industrial surroundings and open views to sky and water. Inside, the floor to ceiling windows and open plan structure create light spaces for tenants Pernod Ricard, Greenpeace, Emolife, restaurant Brooklyn and Conferences. The Smederij also received a sustainability upgrade and now meets BREEAM certificate standards. As with all our properties, we believe that preserving the Smederij’s character is crucial to developing its future.

Industrial functionality meets art deco design in this 1930s masterpiece. Heavy brick and straight lines give St. Job a bold exterior. Whereas inside, curved features and soft colors create an understated elegance. Preserving this former shipyard’s heritage is paramount while we redesign its future. As the headquarters of Millten Rotterdam, we are imagining offices where we and other forward looking entrepreneurs feel at home. Inspired by the building’s simplicity and challenged by its commercial spirit.

Unassuming from afar but remarkable inside, the Timmerwerkplaats is a great example of redundant industrial property receiving a new purpose. As part of the decommissioned NDSM shipyard, we wanted this erstwhile carpentry factory to maintain its heritage. Countless steel beams and rivets were left in place but new elements were added. Including modular and multilayered office spaces that provide state-of-the-art functionalities. The property also received a sustainability upgrade in 2017, readying it for new tenants Viacom (MTV, Nickleodeon).

The dark wooden panneling, angular sides and moss-covered roof give this property a calm presence. Although busy on the inside, the building doesn’t scream ‘office’ on the outside. We purposely bought and developed this waterfront property with that principle in mind; blending the Touwenterrein into its surroundings while offering its inhabitants a modern and calm place of business. The property also includes underground parking, waterside terrace and complementary view. This project transformed an old shipyard into a multifunctional and modern addition to the Realeneiland.

Monumental yet forward looking, the building’s broad facade and strong lines give it a powerful presence. Capping off the structure is an intimate tower room with beautiful views over Amsterdam. Inside, the baroque ballroom is a well kept secret, surrounded by light open plan offices. Like a ‘zonnewijser’ or sundial, the round marble staircase radiates out onto all floors. The Zonnewijser is Karl Lagerfeld’s headquarters. It has been under extensive renovations, with a careful focus on preserving its unique architecture and characteristics whilst transforming it into a dynamic and sustainable working hub. A similar mix of classic and modern stands at the heart of the Karl Lagerfeld brand. In Spring 2019 over 150 Karl Lagerfeld employees moved into the Zonnewijser.

Millten Amsterdam is the proud winner of The Amsterdam Business Award 2018.
